May 18, 2007 - PIX Storm Water Management Symposium, Bethlehem City Hall. Lehigh Valley Green Builders Forum presented and demonstrated green innovative synergistic technology solutions for storm water management to the PIX (Pretreatment Information Exchange) network (lvpix.org) of Lehigh Valley municipalities, businesses, regulators and environmental organizations.

Bruce Wilson presented the nature of green building and the attempt to do as little environmental damage as possible. He also spoke about integrated design where you can design solutions rather than problems without spending much more money.

LVGBF also invited Ken Crank from the Pennsylvania Concrete Promotions Council of the Pennsylvania Aggregates and Concrete Association to present considerations and benefits of pervious pavement as an alternate to traditional impervious pavement, which must be mitigated by detention ponds. Pervious concrete contributes to storm water retention by allowing water to pass through it for retention in the underlying soil, serving as the storm water functional equivalent of a meadow.

One system demonstrated, green roofing, integrates storm water retention with building insulation and summer roof surface cooling. The green roofing design uses no-maintenance succulent plants growing in a 2 to 6 inch layer of soil to provide insulation for summer and winter along with the additional benefit of the cooling effect of evaporation (transpiration) from the soil that draws water stored from previous rains from storage modules integrated into the green roof sub-structure. Additional information on under parking lot storm water storage was also provided.

May 15, 2007 - Lehigh Valley Green Builders Forum co-sponsored "Signs of Hope, What We are Doing About Climate Change," an open public forum at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Bethlehem on what individuals, organizations and municipalities are doing to change in response to Global Climate Change.

May 6, 2007 - Visitors learned about the availability and application of green building materials at the Lehigh Valley Green Builders Forum booth in the EnviroVillage at the RiverFusion festival at Illick's Mill in Bethlehem (www.illicksmill.org/riverfusion.html). Demonstration material included green roofs, durable roofing shingles made from recycled rubber, pervious concrete and recycled glass countertop surfaces and how to determine your carbon footprint.

April 25, 2007 - Lehigh Valley Green Builders Forum co-sponsored a presentation
"Global Climate Change - What Is It and Why Should I Care?" by Lance Simmens, Assistant to the Governor of Pennsylvania, hosted by the John Callahan, Mayor of Bethlehem, at Foy Concert Hall, Moravian College.

April 18, 2007 - Lehigh Valley Green Builders Forum co-sponsored a presentation
"Beyond Climate Change", a presentation by Thomas Pritchett on the mechanisms and latest scientific information on Global Climate Change at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Bethlehem.

April 17-20, 2007 - Lehigh Valley Green Builders Forum booth presentation of "How Green Building Helps Planet Earth," to Bethlehem Area School District as part of its Earth Day celebration at Bethlehem's Monocacy Park. Approximately 1700 Students from nearly every grade level and every elementary school in the school district learned about what happens to storm water and what green building tools could be used to better manage storm water run-off.

April 14, 2007 - Lehigh Valley Green Builders Forum participated in The Step It Up 2007 Festival for Action on Climate Change at Southside of Bethlehem, organized by Clothesline Organics and Home & Planet retail shops. Booth included demonstrations of pervious concrete, green roofing, recycled-glass countertop surfaces, recycled rubber roofing and how to determine your carbon footprint.

March 16, 2007 - Muhlenberg Science Building Tour
Tour of the new 47,000-square foot Science Building at Muhlenberg College, which houses the life sciences program and recently opened for the 2006 fall semester. It is the College's first attempt to obtain a LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) rating. Some of the green highlights of the building include: waterless urinals; low-flow toilets and faucets; two total energy, or enthalpy wheels as part of the heating, ventilating and air conditioning system; low-emissivity windows; wood products certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC); lab casework composed of agriboard; paints, adhesives, and sealants that contain low levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs); a green housekeeping program; and an educational outreach program, which includes the use of television monitors to educate visitors about the building's green features. Ballinger served as the architect and engineer for the building, and Whiting-Turner Contracting Co. was the construction manager. Muhlenberg anticipates a rating of LEED certification for this Science Building.
